What to expect (with your hair) when you're expecting

Having a baby is magical and a touch scary, your body is changing in ways that you don’t expect and can’t control, especially your hair. For instance, did you know that it is normal when you’re not pregnant to shed anywhere between 50-150 strands of hair a day, but when you’re pregnant and your hormones are on high alert you can actually shed up to 500 strands of hair a day.

That can be frightening when it’s your hair we’re talking about, but we’re here to reassure you that it is also normal.

Your hormones are busy creating a baby and while that master plan is underway your hair goes into a resting phase, meaning that new hair is not being produced. So the shedding that naturally happens on a daily basis can thin out your hair to a noticeable level and after your little bundle of wonder makes their appearance into the world, your hair will enter a shedding phase. This means more thinning. Again this is normal.

Your hair growth will kick in again around the six-month mark but the texture of your hair may change permanently, which means you may find your hair is wavy when it was once straight or straight when it was once wavy. It might be oiler or drier or may never feel the same as it once was. This is normal. Your hormones have had a lot on lately and that changes things.

You’re not alone, this is exactly what happened to the divine Zoe Foster-Blake after the birth of her first child. You can read about her experience by clicking here where she covers the highs and lows of those feelings.

If, after around the six-month mark, you don’t notice any of those fine baby hairs reappearing around your hairline, seek some professional help. It’s important to get the support you need and the assurance you deserve.

While all of these hair changes are normal, help is at hand. Try our new super nova hair elixir. Like the event it was named after, the super nova is perfect for repairing and adding body to your fine locks. For adding volume while styling you could also try our new volumising foam or gunpowder. Both of these products will help create the volume you crave and have you feeling more confident in no time.

Most of all remember you are amazing whatever your hair thickness or texture because you’re a mum.
